Is it Safe to Store these Items Under the Sink?

Short answer, no. Long answer, hell no!

Apartments never seem to have enough storage space. The one-hallway closet has the job of holding all our Christmas decorations, vacuum cleaners, extra blankets, and winter coats.

So, the double-door cabinets under the kitchen sink often become the perfect place to stash some of the overflow!

But while you should absolutely organize and use that space, there are some things that you definitely should not store in there! Here are some of our "absolutely don't" under-sink items, as well as some suggestions for how to best use this cabinet!

Hazardous and flammable chemicals

Whether it is cleaning products or anything flammable, these are items that can spontaneously combust in the wrong conditions.

It’s best to keep harsh chemicals in a dry space.

For example, you should keep bleach and other cleaning products in the laundry room. The items should be situated high enough to stay out of reach of children, but within arm’s reach so that they don’t accidentally fall on you.

Living in a small apartment? Don't worry, there are still safe storage options! Here are some ideas:

  • Install a sturdy shelf high enough to keep hazardous cleaners out of reach of children and pets.

  • Consider installing a small, lockable cabinet specifically for these cleaners. This can be mounted on the wall inside a cupboard or even in a bedroom closet.

  • Look for alternative storage locations in your apartment. A cool, dry closet (not the bathroom!) might be suitable, especially for cleaners that don't need to be readily accessible.

Just because you don’t go under your kitchen sink often doesn't mean it should become a place for poisons.

Paper goods

While it might seem like a convenient spot to stash your paper towels, tissues, and bags, under the sink is actually one of the worst places for them. Here's why:

  • Sinks are breeding grounds for moisture. Hot water creates steam, and leaky pipes can cause drips. This constant exposure to moisture can wreak havoc on your paper products. Cardboard boxes will weaken and warp, paper towels will lose their absorbency, and tissues will turn mushy.

  • Moisture loves company, and that company often includes mold and mildew. These unwelcome guests can grow in the damp environment under your sink.

  • The constant dampness can also lead to the breakdown of the paper fibers themselves. If not wrapped in plastic, your paper towels could degrade faster.

So, this is what you do!

Store your paper products in a cool, dry area. A nearby closet, pantry, or cabinet with good ventilation would be ideal. Bonus points if it's away from direct sunlight, which can also fade and weaken paper over time.

Pet food

Storing pet food around chemicals is a safety hazard. If you store these items together or around each other, spills can happen or the harsh chemicals can seep into your pet’s food.

This can be very dangerous for your furry friends.

So, where's the safest spot for kibble?

Airtight containers are your best friend. Invest in a high-quality, airtight plastic container with a secure lid. This will not only keep out unwanted chemicals and moisture but also help preserve the freshness and flavor of your pet's food.

Small appliances

You may be tempted to place your blender, electric can opener, or air fryer under the sink, but don’t.

Electronics shouldn’t be stored under the sink, as there’s a risk of liquid damage.

It’s easy to want to store go-to products like a hair dryer, handheld vacuum, or flat irons under the sink storage area, but water damage can happen. Even moisture from the water itself can cause electronics to malfunction or rust over time.

For frequently used appliances like a toaster or coffee maker, consider keeping them on the countertop. Just be mindful of maintaining a clean and organized look.

Invest in a rolling cart or a dedicated appliance storage container. This allows you to keep your appliances grouped together and easily accessible.
